The Tripura Sundari Temple – A Place of Pilgrimage and Historical Importance

The Tripura Sundari Temple is located from outside Udaipur town is about 3 km away. Udaipur is about 55km from Agatala. Udaipur is the south district headquarters. The Tripura Sundari Temple is most important temple in the area. The average pilgrims or visitors are about 2000 in every day. In compare to other day, the Sunday pilgrims/ or visitors is approximately 5000 to 6000 visitors in a day. The pilgrims are used to visit from other part of the Tripura as well as other states of India. The Tripura Sundari Temple was built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 A. D.

The Tripura Sundari Temple is one of the memorials which are stills bear the testimony of the graceful period under the Maharaja. The temple is significance both historical as well as religious. The site of the temple is already accounted as a place of pilgrimage, and is now a day’s one of the attractive tourist spots in Tripura.

Historical significance:-The historical significance of Temple is greater in many aspects than other temples sites of worship in Tripura Tripura Sundari Temple is most ancient one and it is still glorious and alive and the image of the deity is still being worshipped with outmost devotion, and the temple attracts lakhs of devotees in every year due its indomitable attraction. It is construction style and architectural design and its unique features. The stone inscriptions on the walls of the temple accounts to its historical importance.

Religious Significance:-The Tripura Sundari Temple is one of the 51 pithas/ shaktipeeths sacred to the tantras, so its religious significance is greater than any other temples in the state. But people from all society, irrespective of religion, caste, language to gather around this place of pilgrimage, and this the most salients features of Tripura Sundari Temple.

As per Hindu mythology the Lord Vishnu had cut the body of the “Mata Sati” into 51 pieces by Sudarshan Chakra and all the pieces felt into differents places throughout the country and these places are known as Pithasthan. It is said that right foot of the Mata Sati are felt in Matabari.

History of the Temple: – King Dhany Manikhya was built by Tripura Sundari Temple. According to the Rajmala, King Dhanya Manikhya was arranged for a “Vastupuja” ceremony to build a Vishnu temple at the site of the present day temple. It was said that, from the beginning of the construction, one night the King received a divine message from Devi Bhagavati in his dreams. Then, he was instructed to fetch the idol of the Goddess from Chittagong now in Bangladesh and to install it at the new temple. As per message the King sent his General Rasangamardan to Chittagong in order to bring the idol. The idol was brought from Chittagong and it was immediately not enshrined because the construction of the temple was completed, the temple or monastery was completed after some time and the idol of the Goddess has been installed with complete sacred scripturals and King Dhanya Manikya was dedicated the temple in the name of the holy Goddess, and now a days place or sites named Matabari. Besides that, there are lots of history was perceived in respects devi-idol.

Inside the temple, the idol of the Maa Kali was kept which is made of raddish black kasticpathar; Maa Kali is still worshipped in her “Soroshi’ forming of his temple. There is an idol of smaller size of Maa Kali which is called “Chotto Maa Kali’ and this image is used to be carried by Maharajas of Tripura during the Mrigaya namely hunting and war. According to hearsay, Chhoto Maa had been worshipped by one and all before Devi Tripura Sundari came up.

Location of Matabari: – Matabari is located approximately 3 km south to Udaipur town. The temple is built on a small hillock which is convex shaped, is almost like a tortoise, also referred to as Kurmapitha. It is popularly known as the Temple of the Tripura Sundari or Matabari among the people of Tripura. From that time, the area adjacent to the temple which was named as Matabri. Presently, the block also constituted the name is Matabri Block.

Kalyansagar: – The Kalyan Manikya (1625-1660) has been built the Kalynsagar which is a big pond on the east sides of the temple. There is a fishes and tortoises of huge size are found and devotees fed them with muri and biscuits, and also fed the meat of tortoise in every day. No fishing is allowed in the Kalyasagar.

The Matabari Fair: – Every year a fair is being held at Matabari during the time of Dewali / Depawali. In this Fairs, more than two lakhs pilgrims is gather around there.

How to reach in Tripura Sundari Temple: – The Tripura Sundari Temple is about 58km from Agartala, one can catch the buses from Nagerjola Motor stand which is frequently available, and private car is also available on hiring basis for getting Matabari.
